Our jewelry can take a lot of wear and tear. However, like most things, there is only so much it can bear. Even if it is real gold or silver. To help it last longer, there are a few simple steps you can take to help your jewelry items to shine and dazzle for longer. Want your rings, bracelets, and necklaces to sparkle for years to come? Then read these handy tips!

Don’t Apply Lotions With Rings On
Make sure you apply hand cream and other moisturizers and lotions while you are not wearing your rings. You should also make sure the part of your body you’re moisturizing doesn’t touch any jewelry until you have rubbed the cream in fully. You’ll be ok putting on your jewelry once your skin is dry to the touch. If you don’t wait, the oils in the lotions could end up reacting with the precious metals, causing them to discolor.

Clean Your Jewelry
No matter how fantastic the quality of the metal is, it will still discolor and stain over time. Cleaning your jewelry will remove these stains and marks. To clean metal, simply take a soft, dry cloth and polish the item. Make sure it isn’t covered in lint, as this could scratch the surface. For gemstones, wipe them gently with a damp cloth. Don’t use tissue paper as this might cause scratching. If your item is made of sterling silver, you can clean it with a homemade cleaner, made out of baking soda and water. Simply dissolve the soda in the water and scrub the solution on your item. Rinse with warm water.

Protect Pieces
Jewelry is very delicate and can be spoilt by even the smallest scratch. To prevent this from happening, take off all bracelets, necklaces, and rings when taking showers and sleeping. Remember also to remove it while you are doing the housework. They also need to be protected from extreme heat and cold, as these conditions can cause metals to tarnish easily.

Store Items Correctly
When you aren’t wearing a piece of jewelry, it should be stored correctly. If you just leave it on top of your dressing table out in the open, it could be exposed to things in the atmosphere that could discolor it. They might even be knocked off and damaged. Make sure each piece is separately wrapped, ideally in silk, and placed back into the boxes in which they came

Buy Quality
One of the best ways to ensure your piece of jewelry will last for a long time is to invest in a high quality item. It will be a lot more expensive than buying pieces made from imitation metals and gemstones. However, real gold and silver are less likely to tarnish and stain. You will still need to safeguard the item against physical nicks and scratches. You can check out some excellent items and browse prices on the Verragio website.

Now that you know how to look after your jewelry, you can start wearing it with more outfits to shine very bright!
